I made the place as great as it was, not the other way around.

Especially since, in all this time, the damn showerhead is STILL held up with twine! Apparently, they are going to renovate the place (they needed to about 6 years ago too, but then I went and moved in).

Worst. Superintendent. Ever. Even before his dumb criminal wife broke in.

I think it is only fitting that, as I leave Astoria, I end this blog. It captures my time in Astoria, my first NYC apartment, as I learned the ropes of the city and a whole helluva lot about my fellow human beings.

Did I learn EVERYTHING? Hell, NO -- and I never will. And neither will anyone else. But as long as we all keep on keepin' on, wherever that may be, it is all good.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

JAO -- still in MA, probably still iving with his parents. I have not spoken to him since 2006.

DRS - was engaged to be married when he asked me out. Saw him 6 months ago on the UES holding a little baby.

JDM -- still see him around from time to time, don't really count him as a friend.

The fabulous HB -- finished her Dr.PH at Yale, went to Oxford, then lived in CO, and recently moved to TX

DMH - neighbor who moved back to Seattle to help care for her dad

CSF - moved to China 5 years ago. I still talk to him from time to time. He loves it there.

ED - don't talk to her. She left the Gotham Girls Roller Derby when she got preggy with her son, to whom she gave a terrible unisex name.

Sancho and Dulcie, the parakeets --- Dulcie passed away and I buried her in Athens Square Park. I gave Sancho to my cousin, who released him in a park in New Jersey with several other parakeets.

Susie and Harvey, the rabbits -- adopted them out to a nice guy in Queens, who had 2 sons who cared for 2 other rabbits.

George the bunny - passed away in 2007. I buried his whiskers under a flowering bush at my parents' home in Ewing, NJ this past weekend.

and so ....

Ciao, Adios, Sayonara, Au Revoir, Yassou and Khodafus to Astoria and this blog. It was worth the 10 hours' roundtrip, and even that was not too bad!

I got on Peru Rail at 7am in the town of Cusco, Peru. Apparently, heavy rains washed out most of the rail in Peru, so the first part of the journey was actually in a little coach. We drove through the Sacred Inca Valley (for which I have a tour tomorrow), seeing llamas, cows, pigs, dgs etc. In fact, there were even autorickshaws, which one of my coachmates told me are importaed from India!!

At Aguas Calientes, we boarded the actual train. It is the prettiest journey alongside a river.

When we got to Machu Picchu station, we met with a tour guide, boarded a bus (after crossing trhough the bustling Machu Picchu village), drove 20 minutes to Machu Picchu itself!!!!

This was the first time since coming to Peru that nobody came up to sell me anything!

Our guide, Mario, was fabulous. I was ecstatic to see chincilla and orchids, which people pay so much for in Manhattan and other such places, growing wild and free on the grounds.

I played with llama and alpaca -- one baby llama even came bounding down the stone steps to see me.

An awesome day!

Holy crap! I had the biggest crush on him in high school. He collapsed due to pulmonary congestion, and an investigation as to why that happened is underway. It looks like abuse of prescription drugs.

Since then, I got addicted to the 2007-08 reality series "The Two Coreys", which I found on youtube. Ut stars Corey Haim, Corey Feldman and Feldman's skanky wife Susie (who is now divorcing him.) It starts out all lighthearted and "Odd Couple" and quickly degenerates into the 2 Coreys going to therapy to save their 24-year friendship, due to Haim's abuse of drugs.

It's tragic. Haim is nigh on HI-larious in most of the "Two Coreys" as he tells off Susie, and he is really sweet when he teaches a class to kids who are studying acting. He seems like a nice guy whose demons got the better of him.

Corey Feldman Remembers His Friend Corey Haim
The child star pens a tribute to his fallen friend
By Corey Feldman | Mar 19, 2010

Nobody made me laugh the way Corey did. Corey was that kid in class who gets you laughing and then looks totally innocent when the teacher turns around, and you get the blame.

Even before we did The Lost Boys, I'd heard about him because one of my best girl friends, whom I had a big crush on, had started dating him. I had seen him in the teen magazines, and I had been up for Lucas — a movie I wanted badly — and he'd gotten the part. I was like, ''Who is this kid moving in on my territory?'' Then one day he left me this jovial message on my answering machine: ''Hey, what's up, buddy? We're going to be doing a movie together. Let's get together, maybe hang out.''

Lost Boys was a difficult shoot. There was a lot of tension on set, a lot of yelling. The older kids — Brooke McCarter, Billy Wirth, those guys — were having these parties every night; they had tinfoil on their windows so that they could catch up on their sleep during the day. Corey, our costar Jamison Newlander, and I wanted to hang out with them, but they didn't want us around. So we stayed in the hotel, watching movies, going to the arcade, and we became great friends. Corey and I both came from broken families, and when that happens you create your own surrogate family. We had everything from our own secret handshakes to secret code words to nicknames for each other: Haimster and Feldog.

He was wild. I remember one time breaking into the gym in his apartment building after hours, and…well, it involved a sauna and a blow-up doll. That's all I can remember. Corey, even at 14, had an overabundance of testosterone. Every girl he met he would fall in love with and ask to marry him, and then within weeks they'd be broken up. He only had one girlfriend who lasted more than a year. We grew up fast, so by the time we became young adults, our demons started to rise up. When we both fell into drugs, I, initially, was the one with the more intense problem. I went through my recovery, but he decided he didn't want to grow up. I understood why: We'd never had the chance to live our childhoods.

During those dark times he would do awful, selfish things. He did a lot to hurt me. But I would look at him and know what he was going through. I know what it feels like to be on top of the world and then suddenly have nobody returning your calls. He would call me and say, ''You're my best friend. I need you.'' So if he needed a place to stay, if he needed money, I was there for him. What could I do? I loved him.

After the second season of our reality series, The Two Coreys, ended, we had a falling-out. I felt like he was never going to help himself or appreciate what I had done for him. Then, during my divorce, suddenly he was there for me. I was able to be there for him when his mom was going through cancer, and those experiences created a new bond between us.

About two weeks before he died, he spent a weekend at my house and we had a party with friends. The next morning we were all sitting around in our robes and he gave me his hand and said, ''I just want to tell you how happy I am that we're able to have this time together. I can see the world through your eyes now, and it's pretty f---ing cool.'' I don't think I'll ever miss anybody more.

Published in issue #1095 Mar 26, 2010

On craigslist today --- so good!!!!

yanks fan wanted

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: 2010-04-07, 11:30AM EDT
Reply to: gigs-vcwew-1680545862@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yo, I'm looking for a legit yanks fan that hates red sox fans to help a sox fan buddy from boston make good on a humiliatiing bet when he's down in nyc. so hit me up if you might be interseted

An elephant near 34th Street

<img style="display:block; There I met my team of 4 others (we were Team #1 in more ways than one!)

The actual survery started at 12:15 am. We had to talk to everyone we saw -- whether they looked homeless or not (excluding people who were clearly working) and ask them if they would answer a few questions about their housing situation. If they were asleep or bedded down for the night, we were to consider them homeless.

Our team had 3 areas to cover, which spanned from East 58th Street and Central Park to 3rd and 63rd.

Even though we had probably the toniest section of Manhattan (this project was taking place everywhere in the 5 boroughs), including exclusive Park, Madison and 5th Avenue, we found many homeless people sleeping in the church courtyards. At one church, we counted 8 people.

We also found a man who was not homeless but rummaging through all the perfectly good stuff that people throw out on Park Avenue. I gave him the tip to check outside the Trump Hotel on Central Park West, as they sure throw out tons of useful stuff. He thanked me for the tip.

I also spoke to one man, who was awake sitting on a bed of blankets in a doorway. He nodded "yes" to my questions if he had a place to go. Clearly he didn't, but he had been looking at me and my team while we debated whether we should talk to him, and I think he just wanted to have someone to talk to (if he even understood me.)

We were finished by 2:30 am --- we had found 15 homeless people in our little area alone.

https://a071-hope.nyc.gov/hope/welcome.aspx

Free Cardiac Risk Assessments in NYC!

New York Cardiovascular Associates (NYCVA) is presenting:

"Heart to Heart Screenings for Women and Men"

Feb 11, 2010

5-8pm.

Call 1-877-863-6873 to register.

275 Seventh Avenue, 3rd floor
NY, NY 10001

Skateboarding and Native Americans

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 120px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9tIL6OryBZw/S1D3ucUHDyI/AAAAAAAAATo/F7UMHoASvIc/s200/968.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427109928228032290" />
Members of the 4 Wheel Warpony skate team (White Mountain Apache). It's about an Indian guy in NYC trying to find a wife among millions of set-ups, as is the tradition.

(I actually already am in the movie -- sort of ---- as my photo is one of several potential fiancees that Harry's relatives show him.)

The agent told me to look as young as possible as the actor playing Harry is only about 20 years old (I am 36.)

I arrive at the address given for my 5:30p appointment --- the agent is not there and I am told to take a seat in the front area. More and more really pretty Indian girls --- who actually ARE 20 or so ---- arrive, and I am sure I come off as too old to get this part.

About 45 minutes of all of us waiting there with no agents or movie production employees speaking to us, another Indian woman rushes in and asks everyone who is there to audition for Sonya to gather round her.

"So!" she says (without telling us her name or apologizing for the wait). "In this movie, Harry is trying to meet a wife. He has a dream that he is on a game show like "Love Connection". They show the first woman with the sign -- Neeta, Audience Approval 89%! and the Sonya -- 10%! And that's the part! That's the part!" she repeats the last sentence like "Isn't that great????"

No one says a word but everyone is lookig at each other like "Can you believe this crap????"

I meanwhile am thinking I could very likely get this part.

But I didn't. I didn't even get anything but a glance-over -- as did almost everyone else --- before getting sent on my way and a reject e-mail the next morning.

I just looked it up on imdb.com http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1535110/

Seriously, don't tell me that the Indian Harry gets with the actress so blonde her name is actually Caitlyn Gold.

YAWN.

I am an auntie (again)

So I now have a nephew -- he was born via C-section last night in Trenton, NJ. There, I and several other extras were dressed up for the Cesar awards for a French film called "Red Carpet". We were in the dream sequence where the main character wins an award, and we give her a standing ovation.

Later that afternoon, I went midtown to a hair salon for another scene. I was originally not in this scene but they needed more extras, so what the hey.

I ended up being a featured extra because the main character works in a salon and needed to style someone's hair. The other guys were bald. So I played the client for the actress (Julia Faure) as she talked with all her friends and made plans to go to a jazz club.

C'est magnifique!

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1029367/

Parading for Rob Thomas

usually when I go to a shoot, I am the bottom person on the totem pole -- I have no union or agent. So I am not allowed speaking parts and I get paid less. (Upon writing that, I wonder why I even go????)

Today I showed up at 5am to be an extra in a Rob Thomas video. I had to go to the Church of St Sava on 25th Street between Broadway and 5th.

Apparently, I was considered VIP because I was getting paid (all of $100 but that's not bad when it's in cash.) There were about 25 of us.

All the other scads of people were from Rob Thomas' fan club! When he arrived at 9a, some were crying and fanning themselves a la Beatle Invasion circa 1964!

I have to say that Rob Thomas is a nice, cool guy. He posed with the fans and said hello to everyone.

The video depicts a parade of people with various messages of peace and equality, etc. I was dressed simply, like a girl from the 1970s, holding a sign that said "Peace" on it.

Other people dressed up like trees (and could hardly walk, but were great sports about it). We had a bunch of little kids dressed as bumble bees and flowers (and were soooo cute!) Then there was a gospel choir and a Scooby-Doo-looking bus.

I think they turned it into a gay pride parade because there was an archway of rainbow-colored balloons over the whole thing. So -- while I am not gay, but I play one on TV!

Then we marched singing the refrain:

"Sometimes
we don't notice
How good it can get.

So maybe
We should start over,
Start all over again."

Not bad, even in the drizzling rain! It's clean and nice and pretty. The people are so nice! I heard it got renovated after a fire in late 2007/early 2008 and that's why it's so spacious. There are also little cafe table and chairs on the enclosed porch outside, so you can look at the street. (I have never figured out why people want to do that anywhere.)

And of course who can beat great food at low prices? Nobody, that's who!

My favorite is the cannoli cookie - cannoli filling on a shortbread cookie, topped with tiny chocolate chips and some drizzled chocolate. This treat is a mere $1.50. The coffee is so good, I come here before my morning commute now. For $1.25, why not?

I also pick up 6-inch cakes for less than $20 ---- that's at least $10 cheaper than the hyped-up Magnolia and Buttercup Bakeries of Man-Hurtin'. (www.greaturbanrace.org)

This scavenger hunt charges $140 (donated to charity) per team (at least 2 people) to run around any given city looking for clues, taking digital photos of them performing their tasks, and coming back to the finish (where they first started) to check in. They are allowed to skip one clue without penalty, and get 30 minutes added for each clue they miss or do incorrectly.

Almost everyone I checked in completed all that was needed. Apparently, so many people hit the same gas station for the task of filling up a stranger's tank that the managers got mad. (Though I am very impressed by the one girl who gassed up someone's U-Haul!)

And I discovered a great new park called Teardrop Park with a huge slide (via the photos). I am going to go there soon.

It all reminds me of the cheesy 1980 movie I love "Midnight Madness", which features a 20-year-old Michael J.
