Astoria Life: New York Minutes

Musings from the Queen of Queens, or My 6 years of living in Queens and greater NYC, where I moved to work for the water department and ended up, among other things, traveling the world and appearing on a billboard on Times Square.

What's YOUR dream?

Biting off the line of the homeless man in the opening and closing scenes of Pretty Woman (1991, and OK -- that was set in LA) -- what's YOUR dream?

Times Square wants to know!

Go to www.timesquarenyc.org and fill out your wish on the wishing wall.

Wishes from around the world will be posted on pieces of confetti and showered down on partygoers in Times Square on New Years' Eve!

I already filled out my wish --- how about you?

Resolutions are complete for 2008!

Success!

I just sent off $250 to the Grameen Foundation (a repeat from earlier this year) as they sent me a magazine detailing how $250 buys a cell phone for a remote village and connects them to the world.

The phone service is part of a small business in the village, like a convenience store or bodega, where people can meet centrally and brings in a bit more income for the business owners.

Local tree makes good!

Behold the 2008 Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center!

This tree, a Norway spruce, does not hail from Norway itself but the 'burbs of Trenton, NJ! My parents' neighbors planted this tree 75 years ago, the now-deceased mother intending for it to end up in Rockefeller Center as THE tree. And so it did!

Hallelujah!

I haven't forgotten .....

Times have been a bit tight lately, so I am going to combine my Nov donation with my Dec donation and send $250 to one organization. Thus far, this will be the only New Year's resolution I have kept for an entire year.

Am considering www.kiva.org for this donation ....

Meet the Rockers!

About 2 weeks ago, I shot a series of promos for Rock Band 2. I played the Old World Indian mother who is straitlaced, who goes with her family to Fontana's Rock Club (in Chinatown) where they are all made over into Rock Stars to play Rock Band 2 in a concert.

I chose "punk" and got remade into Joan Jett circa 1989, complete with big black spiky wig. Our stylist was Stella Zotis of Project Runway!

The ads ran on Sunday, November 23 during Nick at Nite. the kids in my MEND class saw me!

As with all my shoots, everyone was sooo nice and fun -- and the food was great! We had some NYU students come be our "fans" at our "concert". And they let me keep the Steve Madden shoes I wore on stage!

Start a band -- rock the world!
