Dali and Destino

I went to MOMA today to see the Dali: Art & Film exhibit. I am a big fan of Dali (as all 4 of the readers on this blog know). I did my best not to look at the films, though, but of course walked right in and came face-toface with a huge screening of "An Andulusian Dog", right at the majorly disturbing scene of an eyeball being sliced by a razor (!) I could hear people aying "OH! EW!!!!"

Interestingly enough, there was a cartoon called "Destino" that Dali worked on with Walt Disney back in the 1940s, but was only just completed in 2003. Set to a Mexican ballad called "Destino", a young woman dances in a desert while all around her, the iconic images of Dali form and disappear. Amazing! It is 6 minutes 40 seconds long and nominated for an Oscar.

An aside: one of my older clients remembers seeing Dali in the cafes of new York before he passed away in 1989. He looked like the above, according to his self-portait.

Studio 57 and Dali!

I bought another signed Dali from Studio 57, a fine art gallery on 57th Ave between 7th and 8th Ave. They have Chagalls, Dali, Miro and Picasso, among others.

My original came from White Space Gallery in New Haven (see "The Dali Arriveth", June30, 2005).

In this classic image, we see the knight Don Quixote, perched on his valiant steed, doing battle with the giant Caraculiambro. He seeks to vanquish the giant and order him to kneel in submission to his beloved Lady Dulcinea. Note the special design in the lower right corner wherein his name and his wife Gala's are intertwined under a crown as a tribute to Don Quixote and his love for the Lady Dulcinea.
